Twenty stacked bars, one per month, against a scale running to 50,000 vehicles. The middle band swells to an annotated peak of 17,342 in October 2025 and narrows steadily through 2026, while the dark band beneath it roughly doubles. A legend gives the August 2026 split: NIO 21,174, ONVO 8,810, Firefly 5,852, group 35,836.

NIO's premium brand is doing the volume brand's job

Group deliveries rose 14.5% in August. Inside that number the expensive brand doubled and the cheap one halved - which is the reverse of what the strategy called for.

NIO delivered 35,836 vehicles in August, 14.5% more than in August last year. That is the number the group reports, and on its own it says very little. Split it by brand and it says a great deal: the premium marque roughly doubled, and the brand built to sell in volume halved.

What ONVO was for

NIO's battery swap network is the company's most expensive commitment and its clearest differentiator. The economics are the economics of any fixed-cost network: the build is sunk, and what determines whether it pays is how many cars flow through it.

ONVO was the brand meant to supply that flow. A cheaper, higher-volume line sharing the same swap infrastructure spreads the station cost across more vehicles and turns a premium-brand luxury into a mass-market utility. On the current numbers, it is not supplying it.

Group volume has been broadly flat since May: 37,705, then 40,597, 35,934, then 35,836. Four months that look like a company holding steady. Underneath them, the composition changed completely.

In ten months ONVO went from carrying the largest share of group volume to carrying the smallest. The premium brand absorbed all of it.

The decline is not a single bad print, either. ONVO rebounded to 12,029 in May and has fallen in every month since: 11,743, then 10,155, then 8,810. Three consecutive declines off a recovery high is the shape of a fading relaunch rather than a seasonal dip.

Firefly is the part of the plan that worked

The small brand is the quiet success in this file. Firefly delivered 40,795 cars in the first eight months of 2026 against 14,555 in the same period of 2025, and it has held between 15.0% and 17.2% of the mix every month since March, the steadiest line of the three by a wide margin.

Note what the year-to-date column does to the story. On eight months ONVO is still up 13.2%, because the first half of 2025 was its own ramp. The damage is entirely in the recent months, which is why the August comparison and the year-to-date comparison point in opposite directions. The monthly series is the honest one here.

What to watch

Whether ONVO stabilises above 8,000 is the whole question. If it does, this reads as a product cycle between refreshes and the swap-network maths still works. If September brings a fourth decline, NIO is running a premium-mix business on infrastructure that was costed for a volume one.

There is a version of this that is good news. A mix shifting from cheap cars to expensive ones lifts average selling price and, all else equal, gross margin. But NIO did not build those stations to serve 21,000 premium cars a month. The bull case and the bear case are reading the same table.
